2009 On-Line Film Contest
Where you actually get something $500 Cash Prize for BEST THANKSGIVING FILM This is our first year for our on-line contest initiative and it was a great success. Many new filmmakers were inspired to produce new work. We received dozens of entries that took aim at Thanksgiving. We are proud of all of our entries and our winner. Lucas Brown Eyes - “Winning this award is an honor, and I am really thankful for the opportunity. This has given me confidence to keep on making films. I’m really happy that there are film festivals and organizations like the Skinsfest out there that help bring Native American culture into the spotlight.”
“Wawoyaka Wicasa,” shouts an elderly Native American medicine man as a drum beats with the intensity of a thousand suns. A child lies before a blazing fire. The drum beats to the medicine man’s voice. He says, “The child’s name is Wawoyaka Wicasa, the storyteller.” Native American names are much more than a title to distinguish people from one another. Some names are a prophecy of our destiny, and this prophecy revealed my passion. I’ve taken my passion and destiny for storytelling and channeled it into film. My passion has been a catalyst for my own personal growth. My passion runs deep and is extremely intense. It engulfs me and takes control. The storyteller in Native American culture is vital. The storyteller teaches morals, entertains, and keeps the past alive. I am, Wawoyaka Wicasa. I am the Storyteller. Scholarship Winners will be announced soon.
